Aggressive approach: The "Balance Transfer Game"
- Involves transferring balances from one card to another every time a promotional APR is set to expire.
- When done properly, this will save you lots of money because it essentially is an ongoing free loan
- Only useful if you are diligent, never miss a payment, and won't acquire more new debt because of the game
Conservative approach:
- Transfer your balance to a card with a fixed low APR. Get 3.9% Fixed APR from American Express Blue (no transaction fee, either!)
3) We recommend transferring balances to New credit card account. You get the best deal when you're a new customer.
4) Apply online for you card. It speeds up the process, and it's safer than offline applications.
5) Balance Transfer Tips
- Always avoid transaction fees. Most of the cards we recommend have no transaction fees. We like Citi cards because theyhave no fees as long as you make the transfer within 12 months. Discover has no fee on transfers if the request is madewith the application. Read the cards terms/conditions carefully to ensure there is no transaction fee.
- Transfer balances from your credit card with the highest APR first to save the maximum amount of money.
- Don't miss any monthly payments. If you do, the credit card company could raise your rate to the maximum allowed.
- Make payment online early, or send your payment in the day the bill arrives. Don't fall into the late payment trap.
- Don't be affaid to use multiple cards. As long as you are not going to acquire more debt because of the new cards, youwill be doing yourself a favor. Your credit score can actually improve if you are successful in paying down your debt due to the lower interest fees. Read more about how credit cards can improve your score.
- It's ok to have more than 1 card from the same company, you just can't transfer a balance to a card from the same company. Example: it's ok to transfer from Citi Dividends to Discover Platinum, but not ok to transfer from Citi Dividends to Citi Platinum Select.
- You can have multiple accounts of the same credit card. Examples: you can have 4 Citi cards: 1 Citi Dividend, 2 Citi Simplicity (same card, different account) and 1 Citi Platinum select. As long as you can get approved, you can get repeat card.
- Since you are allowed duplicate cards, you can essentiall have a never ending 0% APR by alternating between Disocver and Citi cards. We recommend these banks because they have no balance transfer fees (Discover requires the transfer request with the application to avoid the fee)
6) How to know if you'll get approved for the credit card before you apply for it? You should check your credit score. The score is the major factor in determining if you'll get approved.
